Ruddy Kingfisher (Halcyon coromanda)

Posted by
rick (brisbane, Australia) on 9 March 2013 in Animal & Insect and Portfolio.

We had been looking at a roosting Philippine Scops-owl and were on our way to lunch when we got word there was a Ruddy Kingfisher in the next door property. I've always been keen to see this bird and thought someone was playing a joke. All thoughts of food were quickly pushed to one side as we hastened through the garden and out to the dirt road.
Sure enough there it was sitting amongst a dense shrub. We couldn't get too close for fear of flushing it so kept our distance and took photos. A small crowd of local people saw what we were doing and also took an interest and this pleased us because we felt our enthusiasm for birds and nature might spill over on to them.
